Beginner’s Guide to Yoga: What to Expect in Your First Class

Starting yoga for the first time can feel both exciting and a little nerve-wracking. Maybe you've heard about the incredible benefits: greater flexibility, improved mental clarity, and a sense of inner peace, but you’re unsure of what to expect in a class. At Lotus Pond Yoga, we understand that taking that first step into a studio can bring up questions. That’s why we’ve put together this guide to help you feel comfortable and confident in your first yoga experience!

What to Expect in a Yoga Class

  • A Welcoming Environment
One of the greatest things about yoga is that it's for everyone - no matter your age, or experience level. When you step into your first class, expect a welcoming and inclusive environment. At Lotus Pond Yoga, our teachers are dedicated to creating a space where you feel supported, no matter where you are in your practice. Remember, you don’t need to be flexible or in perfect shape to start!
  • Arriving and Settling In
When you arrive at the studio, you’ll be greeted at the front desk. We recommend coming about 10–15 minutes early, so you have time to check in, meet your teacher, and settle into the space. You’ll want to wear comfortable, breathable clothing that allows you to move freely. Most studios, including Lotus Pond Yoga, have mats available to borrow if you don’t have one yet. We also have helpful yoga props like blocks, straps, and blankets available to use. Once you enter the yoga room, you’ll notice the peaceful ambiance with soft lighting and usually some calming music. Choose a spot where you feel comfortable, and take a moment to relax before class begins.
  • The Structure of the Class
Most yoga classes follow a similar flow, starting with a few moments of quiet breathing or meditation to center yourself. This allows you to leave the outside world behind and focus on your practice. After this, your teacher will guide you through a series of yoga postures (asanas) designed to stretch, strengthen, and balance your body. For beginners, these poses will be gentle and easy to follow. Your teacher may offer modifications or use props to ensure you feel supported in each posture. Expect to move through poses like Downward Dog, Warrior, and Child’s Pose. Don’t worry if you don’t get everything right away! Yoga is a practice, not a perfection - just listen to your body and move at your own pace.
  • It’s Okay to Rest
Feeling a little tired during class? No problem! It’s perfectly okay to take breaks whenever you need to. Poses like Table Top or Child’s Pose are great for resting while still staying engaged in the class. Listen to your body and know that everyone in the room is focused on their own practice - there’s no pressure to keep up or push yourself beyond what feels good.
  • Savasana: Final Relaxation
Every class ends with Savasana, also known as a “Final Relaxation Pose,” where you’ll lie on your back, close your eyes, and relax completely. This is a time for deep rest and integration of the physical, mental, and emotional benefits of your practice. Many people consider this the most rewarding part of the class.

Tips for Your First Yoga Class

  • Come with an open mind. Yoga is a personal practice that can feel different for everyone. Be open to the experience, and don’t worry about how you look or compare to others in the room. It's not a competition with others, it's an individual journey with yourself!
  • Communicate with your instructor. Let your teacher know if you have any injuries or concerns before class. They may be able to offer modifications to ensure your practice is safe and enjoyable.
  • Don’t be hard on yourself. Everyone starts somewhere! It’s normal to feel a little awkward or unsure in your first few classes, but with time, you’ll grow more confident.
  • Hydrate and eat lightly. Drink water before and after class, and avoid heavy meals right before practicing.
