The falling leaves symbolize the shedding of old layers, creating space for new growth. In yoga philosophy, we have a similar practice of purification called Saucha, which is one of the Niyamas, or personal observances, outlined in the Yoga Sutras of Patanjali. Saucha is commonly translated as cleanliness or purity, but its meaning goes way beyond simply tidying up our physical surroundings.

So what exactly does Saucha means in our daily lives and how we can use this practice to nurture gratitude, inner peace, and clarity - especially during the season of change?

Physical Purity / Clearing the External
Let’s start with the most obvious layer of Saucha - the physical. Autumn invites us to declutter our homes, clear out closets, and create more space around us. In the same way, we can practice Saucha by being mindful of our physical body. This might look like:

Mindful Eating
Choosing foods that nourish and energize your body, and being aware of how they make you feel.

Cleansing Rituals
Incorporating simple self-care practices like dry brushing, oil massage (Abhyanga), or taking a warm bath to release tension.

Decluttering Your Space
Clearing physical clutter creates mental space. A clean, organized environment helps you feel more at ease and focused.

When we practice physical cleanliness, we are creating an external environment that supports our internal sense of calm and clarity. It’s a beautiful way to honor the body as the temple of the soul.

Mental Purity / Cleaning the Inner Landscape
Just as important as outer cleanliness is the cleanliness of the mind. Our thoughts have the power to shape our reality, and a cluttered mind can cloud our ability to see things clearly. Practicing Saucha at the mental level means becoming aware of negative or toxic thought patterns and working to release them.

Mindfulness Meditation
By sitting quietly and observing your thoughts, you begin to create distance from the mental noise. With practice, you can notice when a thought doesn’t serve you and gently let it go.

Positive Affirmations
Replace negative self-talk with affirmations that support your well-being and growth. Simple statements like "I am enough" or "I choose peace" can shift your mindset over time.

Media Detox
Saucha also applies to what we consume mentally, whether it’s through social media, news, or entertainment. Take time to reflect on how certain inputs affect your mood and mental state. Perhaps this month is the perfect time for a digital detox!

Emotional Purity / Releasing Emotional Clutter
The practice of Saucha also encourages us to cleanse our emotional landscape. Often, we hold on to old grudges, unresolved feelings, or emotional baggage that weighs us down. Autumn, with its theme of release, is a great time to let go of these emotional burdens and invite more lightness into our lives. Naturally, as we focus on cleansing, we also bring in the concept of Aparigraha (non-grasping) outlined in the Yamas as well. It's hard to talk about one of the Yamas or Niyamas without another one being connected in some way!

Forgiveness Practice
Holding on to resentment or anger can block your ability to experience joy and gratitude. Practicing forgiveness (toward yourself and others) can create emotional freedom.

Journaling
Writing about your feelings, especially those you wish to release, can help bring clarity and healing. This can be a powerful tool for self-reflection and emotional purification.

Gratitude Rituals
Cultivating gratitude is a natural way to cleanse emotional negativity. At the end of each day, take a moment to list at least three things you are grateful for. Over time, this practice shifts your focus toward the positive and helps to cleanse the heart.

Spiritual Purity / Connecting with Your True Self
On the deepest level, Saucha is about recognizing and connecting with the purity of our true self - our inner light that is untouched by the distractions and impurities of the outside world. This is the heart of yoga: to peel back the layers that obscure our connection to our essence, allowing us to live in a state of peace and clarity.

Daily Sadhana (Spiritual Practice)
Create a consistent practice that brings you closer to your inner self. This could be through meditation, chanting, breathwork, or spending time in nature.

Acts of Kindness
Serving others selflessly helps purify the heart and deepen our connection to the divine. As we shift the focus from “self” to “service,” we align with the purity of our spirit.

Reflecting on Your Purpose
Take time to reflect on your purpose and the deeper meaning behind your actions. Aligning your life with your values creates spiritual clarity.

Bringing Saucha into Your Life This Month
This November (or whatever month you're reading this!), let’s make space for what truly matters by practicing Saucha in all aspects of our lives. Whether it’s decluttering your home, simplifying your schedule, or letting go of emotional baggage, you’ll find that the more you clear away, the more room you create for gratitude, love, and inner peace.

Here’s a simple journaling prompt to help you begin:

In what areas of my life do I feel cluttered or overwhelmed (physically, mentally, or emotionally)? What steps can I take to invite more clarity, simplicity, and purity into these spaces?

Remember, Saucha isn’t about perfection. It’s about creating a space - internally and externally - where you can thrive, grow, and connect with your highest self.

Wishing you a peaceful and purifying season of gratitude. 🍂

With love,
Katie Beene

Join us for our Thanksgiving Day Donation Based Gratitude Yoga on Thursday, November 28 from 9:00am - 10:15am led by studio Co-Owners: Katie Beene and Alyssa Liadis. Save your spot here!
